US Raises Travel Advisory for Bangladesh to “Reconsider Travel”

Washington D.C. – The U.S. Department of State has increased its travel advisory level for Bangladesh, recommending that American citizens “reconsider travel” to the South Asian nation due to concerns over civil unrest, crime, and terrorism. The updated advisory, issued on April 18, 2025, elevates the risk assessment for most of the country to Level 3.

The Chittagong Hill Tracts region, in southeastern Bangladesh, remains under a stricter “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory due to continued heightened risks, including communal violence, crime, terrorism, and kidnapping.

The State Department cited the potential for civil unrest, noting that while large-scale violent clashes have decreased since the formation of an interim government in mid-2024, occasional protests continue and can turn violent with little warning. U.S. citizens are advised to avoid all demonstrations and political gatherings.

Crime, including petty theft, muggings, assaults, and drug-related offenses, is also highlighted as a concern in major cities. While there is no indication that foreigners are specifically targeted based on their nationality, opportunistic crimes occur.

The advisory also points to the risk of terrorist activity, with potential attacks and other related actions possible throughout Bangladesh.

The revised advisory comes in the wake of significant political changes in Bangladesh following widespread student-led protests in August 2024 that led to the ouster of the previous government. An interim government is currently in place ahead of future elections.

Due to the security situation, the U.S. government has imposed restrictions on the travel of its employees in Bangladesh. Non-essential travel for U.S. government personnel outside of the diplomatic enclave in Dhaka is restricted, and special authorization is required for travel beyond the capital city. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to provide emergency services to citizens, particularly outside of Dhaka, may be limited by these restrictions and existing infrastructure.

U.S. citizens who choose to travel to Bangladesh despite the advisory are strongly encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security alerts and facilitate their location in an emergency. They are also advised to review the Country Security Report for Bangladesh and consider purchasing travel insurance that includes medical evacuation coverage. The State Department recommends having a contingency plan in place for emergency situations and exercising increased vigilance regarding personal safety and surroundings.
