Is Gua Sha Really Beneficial?

Gua sha is a popular East Asian technique that seems to be gaining traction among the masses. With this technique, a trained professional uses a small, smooth-edged tool to firmly stroke your skin in one direction. This helps improve blood flow and reduce inflammation significantly.

You might wonder how gently ‘scraping’ your skin helps it heal. As per Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), good health counts on chi, or energy, to easily flow through your body. If this important force gets blocked in an area, then you’ll start making do with health complications. Gua sha is believed to get this essential energy ‘unstuck’ and flowing again.

Also known as skin scraping, spooning, or coining, Gua Sha has been used in China for over 2,000 years. It’s often leveraged to help treat chronic pain throughout the body. Today, Gua Sha is widely noticed for its skin benefits, but adequate research is needed to prove this.

To prepare you for treatment, your Gua Sha provider will put oil on your body. They’ll then use a stone like Gua Sha massage tool to scrape your skin in long, downward strokes. The essence of doing this is to break tiny capillaries under your skin. In doing so, you’ll see temporary small, red, rash-like dots called petechiae.

As you proceed with the session, your Gua Sha treatment provider may slowly add more pressure to the strokes. They should only apply as much pressure as you’re comfortable with. Actually, Gua Sha need not be painful. It is worth mentioning that you can get Gua Sha all over your body, including your back, neck, butt, arms, and legs. You might also have Gua Sha on your face, but that process is gentler.

The thing with scraping your skin and causing petechiae to appear on your skin is that it activates both your immune system and nervous system, setting off a complex chain of events in your body. When perfectly done, Gua Sha has the potential to release chemicals that bolster blood flow, lessens toxins, reduce pain, and promotes healing in the area.

Gua sha would be ideal if you want to handle issues such as; tight muscles, swelling, anxiety, sinus pressure, and fatigue. However, research is still limited. Some studies have also looked into how Gua Sha can help treat health conditions such as; Hepatitis B, Migraines, Tourette’s syndrome, perimenopausal symptoms, and neck pain.
